One thing I believe many people forget to do when working out is they forget to track their workouts. And not in the sense of how long their workout was or how many calories they burned, but track the exercises, the number of reps and sets, and the amount of weight which they did them at.

I did see someone at the gym recently with a physical journal, writing down everything they were doing. I had to give the guy props to having a journal, because it is a pretty rare sight.  I think it is important for everyone to have a workout journal! Here are some benefits you can get out of journaling your workouts:

  • Track progression
  • Build workout templates
  • Hold yourself more accountable
  • Can set realistic goals
  • Analyze trends

The only thing I would suggest is not keeping a physical journal, here’s why.

Why I don’t use a physical journal.

Although the idea of having a tangible journal is great, there are also some downsides to it. What if you forget your journal at home? What if you lose your journal? What if it gets damaged? Can you easily analyze and track progress from exactly a year ago?

There are a lot of limitations that keeping a physical journal can bring, so that is why I use an app instead. The app I use is called Gym Hero.

What is Gym Hero.

If you don’t track your workouts, you won’t know if you are progressing. That’s why you need a good fitness log. Gym Hero lets you track all your activities. Whether that’s a HIIT session, a workout at the gym or a set of push ups at home. Track, progress and reach your goals in no time. All you’ll need is an iPhone

This app is available on the App Store for free(although there is a pro version which costs $$$), and will allow you to track each workout more easily. The best thing about it is that the app is cloud based, so all of your information is accessible from anywhere! They also have a web interface that you can log into and see your workouts if anything were to happen to your iPhone.

My Take

This app has allowed me to easily track my progress over time so I can see exactly where my bench was over a year ago or what is was last week. In order to progress, you need to see where you were. This app does exactly that. Go download it today and start progressing to where you want to be!
